Learning with animals

Hello people......
My friend Niraj is doing a great job here.
So as you see the topic for this post is "Learning with animals"
By this I don't mean that you have to sit in a zoo to learn new words. I'll put up some words that deal with qualities of humans which are similar to some animals. Lets start
  • Bovine- connected with the cows. Also it describes a person having cow-like qualities (slow, placid, phlegmatic)
  • Equine- connected with horses, or appearing similar to horses. It is from this word we derive equestrian- a person riding a horse or something to do with riding with horses like Olympics' equestrian events.
  • Canine- these would be pretty familiar we have canine teeth. Canine is connected with dogs.
  • Feline- is connected with cats. Also we may say a girl has feline features (cat like)
  • Porcine- is to do with pigs. From this word we derive pork meat from pig
  • Similarly we have vulpine-fox like; leonine- lion like; ursine- bear like (for star gazers Ursa Major and Minor is a good hint); lupine- wolf like.
These were basically words derived from the corresponding Latin words (Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis)

Now I'll talk about certain features we possess which can be considered to be inherited from animals. Or when we talk about these qualities we first remember about the corresponding animal.
  • Lion-hearted- a very brave person
  • Eagle-eyed - a discerning person, very vigilant
  • featherbrained- silly or often forgetting things (I may be a featherbrained creature :-)
  • pigheaded- very stubborn and unyielding
  • lily-livered- a coward
  • dogged - a dogged person is very determined to do something, also when you dog someone you are always followed by that person like in reporters dogged the mayor
Also animals are used as symbols for particular characteristics like "busy as a bee", "industrious beaver","cunning as a fox". "a gaggle (means a collection of geese but it also means a group of noisy people)"

That's all folks.....keep visiting this BEAUtiful site which will help all of us in learning newer words.
